Vážení přátelé,
jak se již stalo hezkou tradicí, i letos dne 27. května se uskuteční tolik oblíbený závod na počest naších významných Šídloveckých rodáků Bohumila Hanče a Václava Vrbaty, kteří se zasloužili o rozvoj běžeckého lyžování nejen v Českém království, ale i v celé Rakousko – Uhersko – České monarchii.
Dne 27. května se srdce všech milovníků lyžařského sportu a národních tradic rozbuší na maximum. V 9:59 papuánského času (12:59 SEČ) bude odstartován za účasti týmů z celé Evropy a Indie jubilejní 100. ročník tradičního Hrabovského kritéria v běhu na lyžích „O hůlku Václava Vrbaty a Bohumila Hanče (a i Němce Emericha Ratha, který nebyl z Hrabové, ale z Prahy)“. Kritérium se uskuteční jako vždy na místě, kde byly našimi slavnými rodáky Bohumila Hančem s Václavem Vrbatou, položeny základy lyžařského sportu v nenáviděné rakousko-uherské monarchii (zde jsme v textu jako vyjádření pohrdání použili počáteční malá písmena), potažmo v celé střední Evropě, tzn. na náměstí v Ostravě-Hrabové.
Sejdeme se již po 100., a tak jako naši otcové, dědové či pradědové si připomeneme jejich nesmrtelnou vzpomínku. Může nás těšit, že na rozdíl od nich, kteří byli vystaveni ve své době pronásledování ze strany orgánu upadající C. a K. policie, které nepřála žádným vzpomínkám na tyto české velikány, podporujícím sílu uvědomění utlačovaného národa, nebo jejich synům, kteří, aby unikli pozornosti nacistické tajné policie, pořádali tyto závody ilegálně v přestrojení za lyžařské jednotky Wehrmachtu chystajících se na východní frontu, případně v době komunistické totality za příslušníky Lidových milic trénujících překročení Alp, my se tu můžeme sejít svobodně a oslavit tento slavný den krásným sportovním výkonem v družném duchu.
Právě v tento den si již po 100. připomínáme památku našich největších rodáků, bez nichž by nám běžecké lyžování bylo vzdálené asi jako Eskymákům plážový volejbal, nebo Němcům humor. A tady musíme zdůraznit, kde by byly všechny ty Květy Peckové Jeriové, Lukášové Bauerové, nebo Katky Neumannové? Nebýt Bohumila Hanče s Václavem Vrbatou, určitě ne na Zadově, ale spíše v zadnici.
Ale, ať se přesuneme od minulosti k přítomnosti, respektive k budoucnosti. Já i celý organizační výbor máme velikou radost, že mezi letošními účastníky uvidíme mnoho členů KHA, a mnoho těch, kteří jsou našimi velkými nadějemi pro příští sezónu. Budeme rádi, když některou z těchto nadějí uvidíme, jak po přesunu z našeho Hrabovského oválu, do arény mistrovství světa v Norském Trondhheimu, zazáří, a mi všichni je uvidíme stoupat na pódium na stupně nejvyšší, kde hrdě řeknou celému světu: „Ich bin Hrabovien“!.
Na úplný závěr Vám chci připomenout slova velkého přítele našich slavných rodáků Bohumila Hanče s Václavem Vrbatou, hraběte Pierra de Coubertina, který se vzhledem k právě probíhajícímu konfliktu velké války, zůčastnil druhého ročníku memoriálu v přestrojení za potulného flašinetáře: „L’important dans la vie ce n’est point le triomphe, mais le combat, l’essentiel ce n’est pas d’avoir vaincu mais de s’être bien battu.“, kdy jménem pořadatelů upřesňujem, že toto samozřejmě platí, ale ne vždy, protože kráse vítězství se nic nevyrovná.

As tradition thus dictates, the 27th May this year sees the return of that much-loved race held in honour of local heroes Bohumil Hanč and Václav Vrbata, who were responsible for the development of cross-country skiing in the Czech lands and by definition the entire Austro-Hungarian Empire.
On 27th May the hearts of winter sport enthusiasts and lovers of national tradition everywhere will be racing as competitors from all over Europe and India gather for the 100th-anniversary meeting of the Hrabová Classic ski race. At 9.59 Papuan time (12.59 CET) the starting pistol will sound “for the poles of Vaclav Vrbata and Bohumil Hanč (and German Emerich Rath, who wasn’t from Hrabova but Prague).” As always, the Classic will take place at the very spot where our esteemed compatriots laid the foundations for ski sports in the much-unloved austro-hungarian monarchy (here we use small letters in place of capitals as an expression of contempt) – and thus in all of central Europe – that is, the square in the Hrabová district of Ostrava.
After one hundred years we gather, just as our fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers did, to celebrate their undying memory. We can be grateful for the fact that, unlike our forebears who were persecuted by state-sponsored instruments of repression who did not wish the populace to be reminded of these giants of Czech society, or their sons, who, in order to avoid the attention of the Nazi secret police, organised these races illegally disguised as Wehrmacht ski units en route to the Eastern Front; or during the communist totalitarian era as members of the People’s Militia training to cross the Alps, we can come together to freely and convivially celebrate this glorious show of sporting prowess.
On this day, a hundred years later, we remember the greatest among us, without whom cross-country skiing would be as foreign to us as beach volleyball to an Eskimo or humour to a German. We put it to you: if it wasn’t for Bohumila Hanč and Václav Vrbata, where would the likes of Květa Jeriová-Pecková, Lukás Bauer and Katka Neumannová be? If not on the dole, probably not in the Dolomites.
But, let us move from the past to the present, or rather to the future. I and the entire organizing committee are very happy to see many KHA members among this year’s participants, many of whom are our great hopes for next season. With joyful hearts we will witness our chosen few shine as they move from our Hrabovian oval to the World Championship arena in Trondheim, Norway, where, as they ascend to the highest step of the podium, they will proudly tell the whole world, „Ich bin Hrabovian“! In conclusion I would like to remind you of the words of a great friend of our esteemed countrymen Hanč and Vrbata, Count Pierre de Coubertin (who, despite the Great War raging around him, took part in the 2nd anniversary memorial disguised as a travelling flute maker) who said: “L’important dans la vie ce n’est point le triomphe, mais le combat, l’essentiel ce n’est pas d’avoir vaincu mais de s’être bien battu.” Be that as it may; on behalf of the organisers we would like to stress that although this may sometimes be true, nothing compares to the beauty of victory.
